Phobias...

I haven't seen a topic like this in a while, and my sister and I just saw a commercial on TV that reminded us of our aunt's phobia of clowns and masks...

So, what are your phobias? Do you know how they started? How do you handle them? (I'm asking this in a lighthearted manner...I'm not asking you to confess your deepest, darkest fears.)

I'm terrified of spiders. How did my arachnophobia start? I'm not really sure, but I think it was when I was about 10 and I was holding a trophy that had been on a shelf in my room for months. It was one of those tall ones with a long hole through it that was open at the bottom. As I was talking to my mom, she suddenly said "Put it down NOW." I was always obedient, but her tone of voice made me react super fast. When I slammed the trophy down on a nearby table, I squished a very large spider that had been living inside the trophy. UGH. My mom had seen it's legs as it started to crawl out of the trophy. Double UGH.

Ever since then, I've been terrified of spiders. I don't want to see them, touch them, be around them, walk into their webs, etc. I don't handle it very well. If it is ON me, I'll turn white as a sheet and come close to fainting. If I just see it or get near it, I usually do a lot of shuddering and screeching, and I holler for someone to come kill the spider. A few months ago at school, I discovered a large spider crawling down the hallway. I looked for someone who could kill it, but no one was around. It was up to me. I finally found a huge book and threw it on the spider from a couple yards away. That did the trick, but I was left with quite a mess to clean up!

There, you know my biggest phobia. Now tell me about YOUR phobias!

The only thing I can think of that would be considered a phobia is needles. I can handle them, but I just don't like them. I think it started when I was 4 or 5 and started getting IV treatments once a month for an immune deficiency. Ever since then, it's never been the same. They make me nervous, even though they don't hurt that much.

ROACHES!

Dispise, repulsed, disgused, freaked out - from medium to disgusing big ones. They are too ugly to live, but they never die! I have literally held a can over one of the smaller less threatening (yet ugly) ones for well over 10 minutes, and repeated several times, but he was gone the next day!!

I have slept in another room because I saw one one time, and called friends over at all hours. I keep my house clean - and well exterminated. Haven't seen one for a very long time! Sorry, sad but true!

I have a few others but that is primarily the biggest one.

They say mice are good at roach extermination, so release those if you ever have a roach problem. Though they would be more destructive, but they are at least cute:nahnah:

"Spiders" is the only one I can think of. I still maintain that they are ancient insectoid assassins manufactured by a lost civilization bent on world domination. I'm not afraid of them when I can see them, it's usually just when I know they're "around", but can't see/feel them about to crawl on my neck and commit murder. It's not so much a "phobia"...more like a "war".

I'm only scare of two thing: spiders and ostriches. The first one for obvious reasons. I believe that Mark hit the nail on the head. And ostriches just glare at you with their big, evil eyes and then adjust their nech in such a way as to get a nice profile shot as well. They have huge claws and can run faster than any human. If you don't believe me then watch Dude, Where's My Car again!

My cat hates spiders, flies, cockroaches, mice, rabbits, and squirrels....well, and dogs and cats too. The first batch are dispatched and turned into dinner. The second batch are simply beaten into submission. Tiny little girl and she faces down the great dane next door and the pit bull down the way and leaves them whimpering. Anyoldwho....I haven't seen scorpions in my current home. If did, kitten would find herself brought inside and we would see what she does with it. She is rather territorial and exterminates anything nonhuman in her house. One can hope.

And TwoS.....you best play nice. I find you doing anything with scorpions besides killing them...you are going to find a burr under your saddle blanket at a MOST inconvenient moment .

And by the way.....burr because I am mischievous, but not vicious...hence the burr instead of a goat head.

I use to be scared of scorpions until I was stung by one. It is not uncommon for them to get in bed between the sheets. It stung me on the leg, a wasp sting hurts far worse.
